The constraint holding AI agents inside software boundaries is the absence of any common protocol for interacting with physical hardware.
Machines speak in proprietary command sets and vendor-specific device APIs that a general-purpose AI agent cannot address without a custom integration written for each target system.
Anthropic is now moving to address that interface layer directly with the Model Hardware Standard, a new specification designed to let AI agents operate physical machines.
The standard is currently available as a research preview. Anthropic plans to open source it in the future.
