Each time a Jersey Shore community imposed restrictions on unaccompanied teenagers, the crowd shifted to the nearest town without them. Cape May resolved to stop being that town.
Its City Council voted unanimously to bar anyone under 18 from its beaches after 8 p.m. without adult supervision, and from all public places between 10:30 p.m.
The measures, requested by the Cape May Police Department, also prohibit backpacks and certain bags or containers from the beaches and promenade after 8 p.m., with a carve-out for bags containing necessary medical equipment.
WPVI-TV reported that several arrests tied to fights and underage drinking preceded the new ordinances. Cape May already had a curfew on the books.
