Chip Roy backs AI oversight hearings but draws the line at new regulation

The oversight-versus-regulation divide in AI governance has a clear position from at least one House Republican.

Chip Roy of Texas, appearing on CNBC's "Squawk Box," said he supports congressional hearings on artificial intelligence but expressed resistance to additional regulation of the technology.

He told CNBC that Congress should have an oversight role, without translating that role into a rulemaking mandate. The distinction matters in practice. Congressional oversight runs through hearings and testimony.

Regulation is different: binding rules with compliance costs attached and operational constraints that travel through every layer of the deployment stack. Roy's stated position draws a hard line between the two.
