How Valve routed around the ESRB to release a Left 4 Dead 2 trailer

The ESRB's hold over physical retail in 2009 was nearly total, giving the Entertainment Software Rating Board effective authority over how and when games could be publicly shown.

Valve found a way around that when the board blocked release of a Left 4 Dead 2 trailer. A former company writer has now confirmed, seventeen years after the fact, that the apparent leak was a deliberate move.

Chet Faliszek, who served as a writer at Valve, disclosed the maneuver in a newly posted video about cut lines from Left 4 Dead 2. He said: "for Left 4 Dead 2 with the ESRB...

we leaked our trailer ahead of time because they wouldn't let us release the trailer." The footage surfaced in 2009 and was reported as a genuine internal leak.
