The approach did not come from Nvidia. Jensen Huang, the chipmaker's chief executive, disclosed to CNBC that Hugging Face contacted him about a potential acquisition weeks before the matter became public.
Huang said the combination would allow Nvidia to expand access to AI for developers and institutions worldwide, his stated rationale for a deal. Hugging Face occupies a particular place in the AI stack.
It operates as an open-source model repository, sitting between compute infrastructure and the applications that run those models in production.
Nvidia's position is on the compute side: its processors power the training and inference workloads those models require. An acquisition would pull both layers under a single ownership structure.
