A mountain lion evaded capture for several hours in San Francisco on Friday after being spotted in the Outer Sunset, part of the city's largest neighborhood.
A multi-agency response eventually brought the animal down with a tranquilizer dart; it was fitted with a tracking collar it had not previously worn and later released back into the wild.
The operation drew in San Francisco police, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, animal control, the San Francisco Zoo, and the Santa Cruz Puma Project.
What the collar adds Wildlife tracking collars give researchers a passive record of an animal's movement corridors and range. The mountain lion arrived at Friday's scene without one and left wearing one.
