OpenAI data center chief Chris Malone exits as company reorganizes infrastructure leadership

The infrastructure layer is where AI capability runs into physical constraint. Chris Malone, OpenAI's data center chief, has departed the company, the latest in a string of executive exits at the AI developer.

An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the change, saying the company "recently reorganized our infrastructure organization to support the scale and pace of our work." The statement frames the departure as a product of structural change.

Data center leadership at a frontier AI company occupies the base of the production stack. Before a model trains or an API response ships, compute supply has to be in place.

Facilities have to be running, and the physical layer has to keep pace with what the engineering organization demands. Malone held the function responsible for that layer.
