OpenAI's IPO pushed past 2026 as Altman flags unfinished safety work

The constraint here is not market timing or valuation. CEO Sam Altman told Fortune in an interview released Saturday that 2026 is off the table for an OpenAI IPO.

"Right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public," he said. "We got a lot of stuff to do." Safety readiness as the gating condition The backdrop makes that framing harder to dismiss.

In the days before Altman's interview, an Anthropic employee resigned and issued a dire warning about AI's capabilities, an event that amplified fears about worst-case AI scenarios.

On the same day Altman's interview published, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned separately that AI development needs to slow.
