Tesla's camera-only robotaxi bet goes live as Cybercab opens public rides in Austin

The central engineering wager in autonomous vehicle development is whether a camera-only sensor suite can do the work that every other major operator handles with multiple sensors in combination.

Tesla is now putting that question to a live test.

Nearly two years after Elon Musk first unveiled the Cybercab as the future of Tesla's autonomy efforts, the steering-wheel-free, gull-wing-door two-seater with gold-tinted bodywork has opened public rides in Austin, Texas.

The camera-only wager in commercial operation Musk has built his autonomous strategy around a stripped-down, barebones system that deliberately omits the multiple sensor types his competitors rely on.
