The central trade-off in book-style foldables is aspect ratio: a tall, narrow phone folds open into an equally tall, narrow panel, and neither state serves the content people actually use.
The industry has been shortening and widening the handset toward a squatter proportion, and Xiaomi's 18 Fold, shown behind closed doors at IFA, takes that further than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 by going both shorter and wider on both display surfaces.
The 18 Fold lands at roughly a 1.4:1 aspect ratio on both its 7.58-inch inner display and its 5.38-inch outer screen. Those numbers put it at the squatter end of the current foldable generation.
The device is Xiaomi's first book-style foldable since the Mix Fold 4 in 2024. In the time since, both Huawei and Samsung shifted to the short, wide geometry that the 18 Fold now joins and extends.
