The constraint is the chip stack. Z.ai, a Chinese AI company, released a new AI model that runs exclusively on Chinese chips, and shares rose 8% on the news.
The company had been running the model globally in stealth mode for a week before making the launch public.
Whether an AI model can be built on domestic silicon and whether it can serve global production traffic on that same hardware are two separate questions.
Z.ai's stealth deployment addressed the second one directly: the model was in live global use before the market had any visibility into it.
