1Password is launching a new capability. It enables artificial intelligence agents to authenticate into user accounts without direct access to the underlying passwords. The feature, designated 1Password for Agents, facilitates AI-driven tasks that require service logins while maintaining credential security.

The system does not grant unrestricted access to all connected accounts. Users must explicitly approve each sign-in request. This measure reduces the friction of managing agent access without exposing sensitive data. The approach addresses the limitations of traditional credential-sharing methods in an environment where AI tools are performing practical tasks.

Aashish Tripathi, chief executive officer of 1Password, stated that the previous model of handing over credentials is no longer effective. Tripathi noted in a press statement that as autonomous tools take on more responsibilities, sharing credentials and relying on trust is insufficient. He argued that agents should be able to perform their jobs securely, a principle central to the new feature's design.
