Cloud inference routes every query through GPU-dense data centers before returning a result, and Nvidia has positioned itself as the primary infrastructure supplier for that path.

The competition between the two companies reflects a genuine architecture question that investors have been working to price all summer: which processing model carries the majority of AI workloads going forward, and which supplier's economics look more durable as a result.

The trade-offs are real and so far unresolved. On-device inference reduces latency and keeps user data from leaving the device. It is bounded by thermal limits, memory ceilings, and the hardware replacement cycles of consumer devices, which run on multi-year schedules. Cloud inference scales without touching the endpoint and allows model updates to deploy instantly, but every query continues to flow through a data center, keeping GPU infrastructure in the critical path for every response generated. Neither model has established clear dominance.

A $5 trillion market capitalization is new territory for Apple. The milestone arrives while investors are still constructing a view on which AI architecture proves durable.
