The constraint in consumer smart lighting sits at the protocol layer. A fixture committed to Zigbee cannot communicate across a Thread mesh, and that incompatibility has been a persistent friction point as the smart home market has fractured across the two standards. At IFA, Aqara stepped into that gap with a new lighting lineup built to run on either protocol.

The flagship product in the lineup is the Floor Lamp T1. It departs from what a lamp typically looks like: the conventional shade-and-base silhouette is replaced by an LED-equipped pole attached to a base. The pole stands 4.6 feet tall, and rather than project light downward, the design pushes illumination outward toward walls and surrounding surfaces. Aqara describes the effect as a splash of color on your wall. The Govee floor lamp takes a comparable approach. What enables the color behavior is RGBIC illumination across 18 individually addressable zones. That zone count allows the device to hold distinct colors at different points along its length without adjacent segments bleeding into each other. A single strip rendering a gradient is a different product from 18 discrete zones assignable independently. Aqara is building the latter.

What dual-protocol support changes in this stack

Zigbee carries the existing installed base. It is the protocol running through a large share of deployed smart home hubs, including Aqara's own ecosystem. Thread is where newer smart home hardware has been moving. A product that commits to both avoids the forcing function that locks a customer into one hub architecture or another, and it remains viable if a household transitions between standards. For Aqara, it also means the Floor Lamp T1 can sit alongside legacy and newer devices without requiring an additional bridge.

The IFA lineup extends beyond the floor lamp. Aqara is entering the outdoor category as well, with permanent outdoor smart lights included in the rollout. Aqara had marked CES earlier this year with smart home firsts. The IFA appearance concentrates that expansion specifically in lighting, and the dual-protocol commitment across the new line suggests the company is treating this as a platform entry built around a hardware stack meant to outlast the current protocol transition.
