Best Buy is launching a beta version of its online gaming destination, Best Buy Gamers, on Tuesday. Chief Revenue Officer Patrick McGinnis told CNBC that the platform will feature gaming content, new technology, and special offers for customers.

The retailer developed the experience in partnership with video game website IGN. The platform will provide members with gaming articles and reviews, along with live updates for Best Buy events and deals on new technology. McGinnis described gamers as a distinct customer cohort, noting their passion for technology, game titles, and community interaction. He stated that maintaining relevance for this group is a priority for the company.

Best Buy reports that tens of millions of gamers shop at the retailer annually, often testing games in stores and consulting with in-store experts. The timing of the launch coincides with significant upcoming releases in the gaming industry. Nintendo is set to release a remake of "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" on Nov. 5, while Take-Two Interactive will launch "Grand Theft Auto VI" on Nov. 19.

McGinnis characterized the rollout timing as ideal given the slate of new video games over the next month, although he noted that Best Buy has been developing the platform for over a year. The company aims to remain relevant to gaming customers daily, rather than only during major launch periods. McGinnis emphasized the goal of supporting customers as they discover new titles and connect with communities, rather than only during high-volume purchase events for consoles or games.

Gaming and computing have been significant growth drivers for Best Buy. In its fiscal first-quarter results reported in May, the company identified these categories as major contributors to growth. During a call with analysts in August regarding fiscal second-quarter results, incoming CEO Jason Bonfig stated that demand for "Grand Theft Auto VI" is expected to boost the gaming category.

Best Buy has been seeking growth drivers to revitalize its business performance under Bonfig's leadership. The retailer has faced slumping sales, tariffs, and lower consumer confidence. McGinnis said the new gamer experience aligns with the company's strategic goals of expanding reach and elevating the customer experience.

In addition to the online platform, Best Buy is enhancing in-store gaming experiences. A location in Torrance, California, will host gaming experiences and activations involving Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft next month. McGinnis said the combination of physical retail and the online platform positions Best Buy at the intersection of technology, entertainment, and culture within the gaming community.

The company plans to refine the online experience based on customer feedback. McGinnis stated that Best Buy recognizes the gaps in current social platforms for gamers and intends to build a complementary experience rather than replacing existing engagement methods.
