A Tesla driver told authorities he was asleep while using Full Self-Driving (FSD) when he crashed into California Highway Patrol vehicles. The incident resulted in two CHP officers being seriously injured and transported to a hospital. Video released by the California Highway Patrol shows the Tesla speeding past flares, cones, and emergency lights at the scene of an earlier accident before ramming the rear of a parked patrol car. In response, the agency issued a statement clarifying that despite the name Full Self-Driving, the system is not fully autonomous. The CHP emphasized that technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to safely operate their vehicles. The crash involved two Solano County CHP officers who sustained serious injuries during the collision.
