General Motors has outlined a strategic pivot toward software-defined vehicles and artificial intelligence at its Onward event. The company aims to use these technologies to counter the growing influence of Chinese automakers in the electric vehicle and autonomous driving sectors.

Despite its current revenue reliance on gas-powered trucks and SUVs, GM leadership presented the manufacturer as a tech-focused entity with a tightened grip on AI. The announcement included a slate of initiatives spanning electric vehicles, autonomous systems, and AI integration.

GM claims it will utilize AI to reduce vehicle development times by half. Compute units up to 40 times more powerful than current hardware are also planned. These upgrades are designed to support the new autonomous capabilities and faster update cycles promised by the Detroit-based giant.
