The slow roller up the first-base line is one of baseball's most collision-prone plays. The pitcher charges in from the mound as the first baseman reads the ball from close range, and both fielders converge on the same few feet of ground with almost no time to redirect. That geometry produced a serious incident Thursday night at Citi Field, where New York Mets starting pitcher Nolan McLean's knee connected with the head of first baseman Jared Young as both went for a grounder in the top of the sixth inning, leaving Young face-down and motionless on the infield.
The situation developed when Philadelphia Phillies batter Justin Crawford grounded a slow roller toward first base. Young dove to field it. McLean, pitching for the Mets that night, attempted to jump over his teammate. McLean's knee caught what appeared to be the side of Young's head as he came over. Young went down face-first and lay still for several moments.
Mets medical staff came out of the dugout and went directly to Young. Trainers stabilized his neck on the field and conducted an initial evaluation before placing the 31-year-old on a stretcher. As he was driven off the infield, Young raised his thumb toward the Citi Field crowd. The fans responded with an ovation. Mark Vientos replaced Young at first base when play resumed.

The Mets had not released an official medical update at time of publication. The team said it expected to provide further details once hospital evaluations and concussion testing were complete.
Those two assessments run on different timelines. Structured concussion testing requires cognitive and neurological evaluation away from the field. The neck stabilization performed on the infield points to a parallel track: imaging for any potential spinal involvement determines whether the collision's effects extend beyond the head contact and cannot be compressed to fit a game schedule.
