A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion in penalties on Wednesday following a September jury verdict that found the social media company misled users regarding data privacy. Judge Francis Mathew set the penalty amount, marking a legal victory for New Mexico as the only state that declined to settle its claims during a nationwide legal battle. The ruling comes nearly a decade after the Cambridge Analytica scandal emerged. The original lawsuit stemmed from reporting that data firm Cambridge Analytica harvested information from more than 50 million Facebook users to craft political advertisements during the 2016 election. Meta has previously stated it expects to appeal the decision. The company did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
