Microsoft has unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, its first device to utilize the Nvidia RTX Spark system on a chip. The announcement, made at the company's first live event in two years, also detailed upcoming changes to Windows 11 and outlined a vision for local AI and agentic workflows in personal computing.

Originally teased in May 2026, the Surface Laptop Ultra begins at $2,599. The device is available in various configurations featuring either a 5,120-core or 6,144-core Blackwell GPU and supports up to 128GB of LPDDR5x unified memory. Pre-orders are currently open, with shipping scheduled to begin on October 16.

Microsoft positioned the laptop primarily for developers but emphasized its graphical performance during the presentation. By relying on unified memory allocation rather than the physical video memory limits of traditional graphics cards, the system can allocate resources for modern gaming and local AI development. The company demonstrated that the AAA title Gears of War: E-Day runs on the device, indicating that high-end gaming is viable without a dedicated discrete GPU.
