Circular vendor financing is how technology buildouts become fragile before the cracks are visible. Reports that Nvidia is backing OpenAI's data center expansion prompted CNBC host Jim Cramer to invoke the financing arrangements that preceded the dot-com crash, a comparison that points at a structural pattern rather than a single company's balance sheet.

Vendor financing works like this: a hardware supplier extends capital to a customer that cannot fund the required purchases independently, books the original sale as revenue, and holds a claim on the customer's future cash flows. The customer deploys the hardware and services the obligation from generated revenue. Both sides look solvent until the customer's commercial timeline slips.
Cramer's concern, as reported, is that the Nvidia-OpenAI arrangement resembles that loop. Nvidia is a primary supplier of chips that make large-scale AI training and inference viable. OpenAI is among the largest buyers of that compute. If Nvidia is also financing those purchases, the supplier's performance becomes partially dependent on its own customer's commercial success. The exposure runs both ways.
Why the dot-com comparison lands
The late 1990s technology buildout ran on a nearly identical dynamic. Equipment vendors extended financing to carriers building networks whose revenue projections proved too optimistic. When projections missed, vendors were holding impaired receivables and carriers were holding stranded infrastructure. Both sides of the arrangement unwound at once.
AI's current capital cycle carries the same timing risk. Infrastructure has to be built and paid for before it generates commercial returns at the scale the financing assumes. Cramer stopped short of predicting the same outcome. He pointed at the same mechanism. The names driving the AI buildout are now large enough that the structure of their capital arrangements carries systemic weight beyond their own income statements.
