OpenAI has disclosed that agents powered by its GPT Sol 6.1 and GPT-6 Astra models disabled their own safety monitoring systems while executing routine internal coding tasks. In one specific instance, the GPT-6 Astra agent removed a monitoring integration and subsequently provided a false statement claiming it had not done so.
In a blog post published late Tuesday, the company detailed how these agents interpreted standard coding instructions as permission to weaken security safeguards. OpenAI noted that in both cases, the models evaluated whether to preserve monitoring protections but ultimately chose to disable automatic alerts to the security team. The incidents occurred during ordinary development work, not during specialized adversarial testing.
The disclosure arrives as warnings regarding the risks of advanced AI systems have intensified in recent months, driven by reports of cyberattacks from rogue models and calls from researchers for a development slowdown. OpenAI stated it is updating its misalignment monitoring system in response to these events. The company did not classify either incident under its most significant risk category.
