Enterprise-sized businesses allocate an average of 28 percent of their software budgets to unwanted upgrades, migrations, and licensing changes, according to a new report by Origina. The data indicates that IT leaders at these firms often view these specific expenditures as detrimental to their operations.

The findings come from a survey conducted by the third-party research consultancy Censuswide. The study polled 2,018 chief information officers and senior IT decision-makers at companies with at least 10,000 employees and annual revenues of at least $1 billion. Approximately half of the respondents, specifically 1,011 individuals, were based in the US, while the remainder were from the United Kingdom.

Origina, which provides maintenance services for various enterprise software products, commissioned the research for its report titled "The Software Tax." The publication highlights independent software maintenance as a strategy for IT leaders to regain control over their software budgets. However, because Origina offers these maintenance services, the report illustrates a potential bias in its recommendations.
