Allegheny County police have arrested 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway on suspicion of killing a Pittsburgh pediatrician during a home invasion. Court records indicate that Hemingway had been released without bail on a prior burglary charge in July, a detail that has emerged as investigators pursue new homicide and assault counts against him.
Dr. Idris Evans, 46, was pronounced dead at the hospital following an attack at his Edgewood, Pennsylvania home. His wife was hospitalized and listed in stable condition after sustaining injuries in the same incident. Authorities brought seven new charges against Hemingway on Thursday, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing.
According to court documents, the alleged intrusion occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Linden Avenue. Evans' wife told investigators that the couple awoke to find a man attacking them in bed with a kitchen knife. She reported that the attacker was wearing only underwear and made statements referencing "being God." The victim reportedly called out the name "Elijah" to the intruder, suggesting he may have known the suspect.
Hemingway's criminal history in Allegheny County dates back to 2016. His most recent prior arrest occurred in July in connection with a burglary that allegedly took place in February. Court records show he was released without bail on that specific charge before the current attack. Evans served as the medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and held a position as an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
The couple's two children, ages 8 and 12, were present in the home during the attack. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities process evidence from the scene and review Hemingway's history of interactions with the victim.
