In photonic integrated circuit manufacturing, gross margin is almost entirely a function of fab throughput. A foundry running at low utilization spreads its fixed overhead across fewer wafers, compressing margins regardless of the quality of the photonics on the chip. That structural cost problem is the constraint sitting directly underneath Quantum Computing Inc. (NASDAQ: QUBT) as the company prepares to report Q2 2026 results on Aug. 10.
What the Q1 numbers actually show
QCI's first-quarter 2026 revenue came in at $3.7 million, up from $39,000 in the year-ago period. The jump looks dramatic. The source of it matters more. Most of that growth came from acquiring Luminar Semiconductor and NuCrypt, not from organic expansion in existing quantum products. Operating expenses reached $19.8 million, a 139% increase year over year, absorbing headcount additions and transaction costs from those deals. The company posted a net loss of $4.1 million, while ending the quarter with roughly $1.4 billion in cash, equivalents, and investments.
That combination of a $1.4 billion cash position and sub-$4 million quarterly revenue sets an implicit clock. Investors who read the cash as runway are simultaneously reading it as a timeline for converting it into visible, paying customers at scale.
Where the foundry sits in the stack
QCI operates Fab 1 in Arizona, manufacturing thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonic integrated circuits. The fab is currently running small-batch production only. The company has said gross margins remain low because of underutilization and high overhead, a self-reinforcing problem until order volume grows. The NIST contract and a contract backlog of roughly $16 million as of March 31 provide some forward visibility, but backlog is not revenue, and it is not margin.
The product portfolio spans the Dirac line of room-temperature quantum optimization systems, reservoir-computing hardware, TFLN photonic chips, sensing devices, and cybersecurity products. Integration of Luminar Semiconductor and NuCrypt remains ongoing, with overlapping engineering roles and continuing work to reach the quality levels photonic devices require.
The Q2 setup
Pre-earnings revenue estimates sit around $4.7 million, a modest step from Q1's $3.7 million. If the actual print lands near that figure alongside continued heavy losses and no clear evidence that Fab 1 is scaling toward volume production with paying customers, investors positioned for near-term quantum revenue growth will have thin material to work with. The $16 million backlog and Fab 1 utilization rates are the two numbers that matter on Aug. 10.
