When a search engine's AI answers the query on the results page itself, the click never comes. That is the mechanism Reddit is reportedly weighing as it considers whether to renew its content licensing agreement with Google. The Wall Street Journal reported that Google's AI-generated summaries have reduced the volume of traffic flowing from search results to third-party websites, and Reddit is reconsidering the benefits of the deal as a result.

The traffic floor that defines the deal's value

The economics of a content licensing arrangement between a publisher and a search engine rest on a two-way assumption: the licensor provides data, and in exchange receives some combination of cash and distribution. Distribution here means referral clicks, the sessions that bring users from a search results page to the platform where they can be monetized through advertising or engagement.

Google's AI summaries break that second half of the assumption. When the search results page generates an answer drawn from indexed content, the user's query is resolved without a click-through. For Reddit, whose community-generated content has historically attracted search traffic on specific, niche questions, that shift in click behavior directly affects how the platform can calculate what any licensing arrangement is worth.

Reddit reassesses the arrangement

The Journal's report says Reddit is reconsidering whether the Google agreement still makes commercial sense given the reduced traffic flow. That framing matters.
