The bottleneck in modern air defense is triage speed. A layered strike coordinating cruise missiles from aircraft, surface-launched precision munitions, and autonomous attack drones on separate approach trajectories can outpace any integrated defense network's intercept queue. Russia's defence ministry described its latest attack on Ukraine in exactly those layered terms: a "massive strike using long-range precision air, land, and sea-based weapons and attack drones."
Poland scrambled fighter jets. Finland restricted its airspace.
"Air, land, and sea-based" launchers send weapons on separate radar signatures and approach angles, forcing air defense systems to maintain multiple simultaneous track files and intercept geometries. "Long-range precision" places the launch platforms outside immediate air defense range. Attack drones contribute volume: slower than cruise missiles, they exhaust interceptor reserves and compete for radar allocation with higher-priority guided munitions arriving in the same window. The practical effect of combining all three is that no single point defense layer can cover the full package.
The Russian defence ministry's statement used the term "massive" but provided no platform count or munition figures.
