The bottleneck in the current AI adoption cycle is the gatekeeping bot. Deployed to manage workflows, route decisions, or screen incoming work, these systems are now generating the friction they were supposed to eliminate. Jobs and businesses have changed in the process, but the change arrives packaged with confusion and encounters that workers describe as downright awkward.

Where the friction compounds

The mechanism is structural. A bot positioned at a decision node does two things at once: it blocks human throughput while also producing output at volume. That second function is the accumulating problem. The term circulating in workplaces is "slop," a descriptor for AI-generated content that fills inboxes, queues, and review pipelines without clearing the bar a human sender would have had to meet.

The result is a compounding loop. Workers submit to an AI gatekeeper. The gatekeeper generates a response or re-routes the submission. The net effect on the human downstream is more material to process, not less. The economics of that loop do not favor the worker's time.

Confusion operates as a separate layer. When the system making a decision is opaque, workers cannot tell whether to push back, resubmit, or escalate. Awkward encounters follow: humans arguing with or working around a bot that cannot register the argument, and cannot register the awkwardness either.

None of this negates the productivity case for AI in enterprise settings. But the bottleneck problem signals something the rollout phase tends to obscure. Deploying a model at a workflow node changes who absorbs the cost of its errors. In a human-to-human chain, errors surface through conversation and get corrected quickly. When a bot occupies that node, the correction loop breaks, and the humans on either side carry the latency.

The open question for enterprises is whether autonomous decision points are being placed in the right positions in the stack, or whether the current configuration simply trains workers to navigate around systems that cannot accommodate the friction they create.
