The action is the first known U.S. military strike in Iran since President Trump paused a two-week military campaign in the strait in late July, and comes one week after U.S. forces finished clearing all mines from the lane.

The threat geometry of rocket-deployed mines is what makes Larak Island tactically significant. A vessel laying mines must enter the lane directly; a launcher positioned on land can place them from standoff distance, shifting the patrol requirement from the waterway itself to the surrounding shoreline. A U.S. official said American forces are "monitoring the area closely and remain prepared to protect the free flow of commerce" through the strait.

Tasnim News Agency, which is affiliated with the IRGC, reported the strike was conducted by a drone and that two people were killed and two others wounded.

The zero-tolerance posture had been declared at the time of July's pause. Trump posted on Truth Social that Iran had been notified any ship or boat placing new mines would be "immediately and systematically destroyed." He wrote: "There is a Zero Tolerance policy on mine placement in full force and effect."

The IRGC responded with a statement that the attack "will be answered by the sons of Iran and will result in the punishment of the aggressor."
