The serialized model in streaming is built on a compounding problem: each new chapter inherits audience investment from its predecessor, along with the full weight of that predecessor's quality reputation. Marvel Studios arrived at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California with that dynamic on display, releasing the first trailer for VisionQuest. The show is the third entry in the arc that began with WandaVision and continued through Agatha All Along, following Vision (Paul Bettany), killed in Avengers: Infinity War, resurrected in WandaVision as an all-white version, and left with his memories restored in that series' finale.
Where the trilogy stands
Marvel's Disney+ output has been uneven by most reasonable reads. The studio's streaming catalog spans a handful of hits, a few misses, and a range of middling work. WandaVision was the standout. Agatha All Along, an excellent sequel of sorts, built on the same universe and kept the quality signal intact. VisionQuest completes the trilogy, and the trailer is the first public look at how that conclusion is framed.
The story the WandaVision finale left open is what Vision does now that his memories are restored. VisionQuest is built around that thread, the first Marvel streaming project to follow the character after WandaVision ended. The question now is whether the audience that tracked two prior entries in the arc shows up for a third.
What else D23's first day produced
The event's opening day extended well beyond VisionQuest. Marvel released publicly the Avengers: Doomsday footage that had been screened exclusively for San Diego Comic-Con attendees last month. A first teaser for Ahsoka season 2 was also released. Casting news for the MCU's X-Men movie was announced.
On the Star Wars side, D23 attendees received an exclusive sneak peek at Star Wars: Starfighter. A trailer for LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, an animated special arriving on Disney+ next month, was released more broadly.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day also produced a major reveal during the day.
