The acceptance layer is where any central bank digital currency has to prove itself in practice.
The European Central Bank is now targeting that layer directly, recruiting online and mobile merchants across the euro area for a 12-month beta of digital euro payments.
Applications close October 27, with a pilot date set for 2027. Settlement architecture and ledger rules can be finalized in isolation.
The instrument stays inert, though, until merchants integrate it into their checkout flows.
