The central constraint in low Earth orbit internet is coverage geometry: a satellite network becomes commercially viable only when its nodes span enough orbital planes to guarantee continuous line-of-sight from any served location to at least one satellite overhead. That threshold marks when a constellation transitions from development to commercial service, and Amazon has now crossed it for Leo, its broadband satellite service. The company says commercial operations will begin later this year.

Where Starlink's lead lives

Leo enters a market with one established competitor. SpaceX's Starlink had a four-year head start on Amazon and now operates more than 10,000 satellites. Constellation size is the primary operational variable in LEO internet. More nodes tighten coverage cells, shorten the hand-off interval between satellites passing overhead, add redundancy at any ground point, and increase aggregate capacity for concurrent users. Starlink's four-year ramp has accumulated scale on all of those dimensions simultaneously, and the resulting network is the benchmark against which Leo's service quality will be judged from its opening day.

That lead is compounded by time in ways satellite count alone does not capture. A constellation program running for four years has had opportunities to tune its ground station network and refine orbital insertion cadence to close coverage gaps. The more than 10,000-node figure reflects accumulated operational iteration, not a single deployment push.

What the milestone means for the competitive picture

Clearing a launch-viable coverage threshold and matching Starlink's operational scale are not the same achievement. Amazon has done the first. The gap in constellation size between Leo at launch and Starlink's existing network is the variable that will shape how Leo prices its service and which geographies it can cover with credible service-level commitments.

How quickly Amazon builds beyond its launch-viable count, and whether it can sustain a deployment pace that meaningfully pressures Starlink's lead, is the trajectory the market will track. What the current deployment establishes is a cleared launch threshold. The clock on closing Starlink's four-year head start begins when Leo opens for commercial customers, which Amazon says will happen later this year.
