Where encryption sits in the stack
Apple's end-to-end encryption is implemented at the account level such that Apple itself does not hold the keys needed to decrypt user content. A legal demand for readable user data does not simply ask Apple to decide whether to cooperate. It asks Apple to produce something the system, as designed, will not permit Apple to retrieve.
