The prevailing bear case for cybersecurity stocks earlier this year centered on a specific concern: that AI model advances would let enterprises and smaller vendors replicate detection logic cheaply enough to threaten established platforms. CrowdStrike's most recent quarter has, so far, run counter to that thesis, with AI appearing to function as a demand tailwind rather than a structural threat to the sector.

Where the disintermediation argument breaks down

The bear thesis had a coherent logic. If a large language model can generate detection rules and synthesize threat intelligence at low marginal cost, the proprietary advantages that platforms spent years accumulating look less durable. An enterprise with a capable model might, in that view, route around the incumbent stack entirely.

Detection platforms derive their value from something that does not port easily into a prompt: telemetry at scale. The wider the endpoint coverage and the longer the historical signal record, the better a platform's ability to separate genuine threats from noise under production load. That is the constraint the disintermediation argument underestimated. Cross-customer behavioral data accumulated over years is not a library you can replicate on demand.

AI raises that constraint's relevance rather than dissolving it. Automated attack tooling generates more events per endpoint and more synthetic identity activity, with lateral movement that deviates from baseline only subtly. Processing that volume accurately requires the underlying data depth. A smaller vendor or an enterprise standing up its own detection faces the same telemetry gap it always did, now with a faster event rate to clear.

CrowdStrike's results suggest the company is sitting on the right side of that dynamic. Rather than compressing security budgets by enabling homegrown detection, AI appears to be expanding the threat surface enough that demand continues to flow toward platforms with the scale to handle it.

Whether AI tooling further commoditizes the detection layer as models improve is a question one quarter cannot settle. But CrowdStrike's results stand as early counter-evidence to the disintermediation thesis, and the mechanism they point to is clear: in this stack, data depth holds the durable advantage over model quality.
