Google is launching a new safety feature for the Chrome browser that displays warnings to users before they visit websites flagged as suspicious. The system aims to provide clearer information regarding the potential malicious nature of a site prior to access.
This development builds on a two-stage notification system introduced for Chrome file downloads in 2024. That previous update provided visually distinct alerts for blocked files, differentiating between those determined to be "suspicious" and those classified as "dangerous." The new site warnings apply a similar framework to web browsing.
The feature will flag a website as suspicious if it detects qualities similar to other sites associated with phishing, malware, and scams. Google describes this specific warning level as having a "lower confidence" rating. Users who are certain that a flagged website is safe can manually mark it as such, overriding the automated warning.
