The binding constraint in large-scale AI data center design runs through the interconnect layer. Moving data between accelerators at the speeds that modern AI workloads demand exceeds what copper traces can reliably deliver at scale, a limit set by signal attenuation over distance and heat that accumulates as data rates climb. Photonics replaces electrical signaling with light. Where copper carries electrical current, optical interconnects carry modulated light through fiber, a medium that propagates with far lower signal loss and far higher bandwidth potential per physical link. GoPro, the action camera maker, is merging with Starman Optical, a private photonics company, and pivoting into data centers, a move that sent its shares up 38% and takes the consumer hardware brand into the AI infrastructure stack.

The interconnect constraint

At the cluster level, accelerators need to exchange data with neighboring chips continuously and at low latency. As AI model sizes have grown and cluster configurations have scaled to thousands of chips, the demands on interconnects have grown with them. The bandwidth differential between electrical and optical links also widens as cluster scale increases. Copper's bandwidth ceiling and heat accumulation under sustained load become the binding factors at that density. Optical interconnects extend reach and raise bandwidth per link without those thermal penalties. Starman Optical works in this part of the stack, and the merger brings that capability inside GoPro's corporate structure.

What GoPro is repositioning toward

GoPro's existing business is built around consumer action cameras, a product category that competes on hardware specs and video quality and sells through retail channels to individual buyers. Data center photonics components address a different customer entirely. Procurement there is driven by operators building AI infrastructure at scale, where product timelines and contract structures bear no resemblance to consumer electronics. The merger with Starman Optical moves GoPro across that divide. Starman Optical was a private company before this deal.
