Actor James Woods has released his third album, The Killer’s Wife, a concept record produced under his own label, Breakheart Music. The project marks a significant phase in his career following his self-described "second act," which began after Hollywood blacklisting and the January 2025 Pacific Palisades fires that displaced him and his wife, Sara, due to smoke damage to their home.

The album was created in collaboration with musical artist Bob Wayne and four-time Grammy winner Shooter Jennings. It draws on Woods’ early years as an actor on the road and centers on a true story from his past that he initially treated as fiction. The narrative involves a relationship with a young woman and mother whom Woods later discovered was married to a serial killer. This saga inspired both the album’s title and its featured song.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Woods described the inspiration behind the record. He noted that while he would not reveal the woman’s privacy or current location, he had heard she carried on and overcame the experience. "I always thought about this question. It intrigued me. Why didn’t he murder her?" Woods asked, reflecting on the event. He characterized the album as "a musical parable into the dark heart of evil, and the glorious triumph of good," adding that he viewed the situation as a spiritual battle for the survival of the species.

Other tracks on the album explore similar themes. "The Hearts of Men" was inspired by Woods’ reading of Matthew 24:12 in the Bible, a passage concerning the hardening of human hearts. "One in the Chamber," which Woods cites as his favorite track, emerged at the last minute and addresses the need for preparedness in violent times. Woods praised Bob Wayne’s arrangement of "One in the Chamber" as a beautiful ballad that reveals its darker subject matter only as it progresses.

The collaboration began with a chance encounter at Dan Tana’s, an iconic West Hollywood restaurant. Woods and Sara were dining with Jennings and his wife, Misty Swain, when Jennings asked if Woods had ever considered writing lyrics. That night, Woods wrote "Misty Morning" in the Notes app on his iPhone in 20 minutes. After waiting nearly a month without a response, Woods received a version of the song back from Jennings, an event he said changed his life.

Sara has served as art director for Breakheart Music, creating all three album covers and every photograph used in the releases. The first two albums, Hear the Thunder Crack’ (released October 2024) and Tombstone Opera, reached the Top 10 on Apple Music’s country album charts and sold several thousand physical copies. Jennings described Hear the Thunder Crack’ as an "expansive poetic journey" and effectively Woods’ autobiography.

Like its predecessors, The Killer’s Wife was recorded at Hollywood’s Sunset Sound studio. Woods adhered to a rule against using Auto-Tune or artificial intelligence. In addition to writing lyrics, Woods provides spoken-word passages layered throughout the songs performed by Wayne. Jennings noted that Woods’ writing is cinematic and that the album unfolds like a "mini-opera," exploring new sonic spaces.

Customers can purchase the record on CD or vinyl via jamewoods.com. Memphis Record Pressing crafted the vinyl edition, which uses translucent hues and opaque sand-like textures to evoke the seaside. The design also includes bright-red blood splatters to symbolize the burial sites of the serial killer’s victims.

Woods, 79, previously left MIT in 1969 to pursue acting, appearing in films such as Salvador (1986), Casino (1995), and Ghosts of Mississippi (1996). After being sidelined by Hollywood around 2018 due to his conservative views and support for Donald Trump, he produced Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer (2023). Although advised to remain "invisible" during that release, Woods stated that he no longer cared about the Hollywood world as much as before. He now focuses on creating art with musicians he describes as "magicians," preferring to celebrate poetry and music over political causes.
