Ed and Sharon Bauer, the parents of Christa Bauer Gilley, have publicly urged Italian and U.S. authorities to cooperate in extraditing their son-in-law, Lee Gilley, to Texas. The couple, who identified as Roman Catholic in an op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal, stated that they do not seek the death penalty for their daughter's husband but rather justice for Christa's death. They emphasized their belief in the sanctity of human life, arguing that justice should focus on improving the well-being of women and confronting global violence against them.

Prosecutors in Texas allege that Lee Gilley, 39, is responsible for the murder of his wife, Christa, who was 38 and pregnant at the time. The body was found inside the family home in October 2024. Investigators report that Gilley cut off his ankle monitor and fled from the United States to Italy in May, weeks before his trial was scheduled to begin. His flight from the country has complicated the legal proceedings, according to his attorney, Dick DeGuerin. Speaking to Fox News Digital, DeGuerin noted that if Gilley is returned to Houston, his flight could be used as evidence of consciousness of guilt.

The extradition process has been hindered by legal concerns within Italy. When Gilley was captured by Italian authorities, Italian courts expressed concern that releasing him for return to the U.S. might expose him to the death penalty, a punishment abolished in Italy. Texas prosecutors subsequently removed the death penalty from the case to address this jurisdictional barrier. The Bauers have also expressed opposition to capital punishment in their public statements.

On Wednesday, Gilley appeared in court in Italy. Although initial proceedings were expected to determine his extradition back to the U.S., no decision was made at that time, DeGuerin confirmed. A preliminary hearing regarding the case is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9. DeGuerin maintains that his client has insisted from the beginning that he had nothing to do with his wife's death. The attorney further claimed that Christa's death was caused by a pre-existing medical condition.

The Bauer family has described a period of anguish where legal battles began before they had time to grieve. They stated that their faith has kept them going as they wait for accountability for the lives taken from them. While Texas prosecutors await approval from Italy to begin the extradition process, Gilley remains overseas. DeGuerin continues to assert that his client is innocent.
