Agents arrested a suspected co-conspirator of the ShinyHunters hacking group earlier this week, according to FBI Director Kash Patel. The detention is the latest in a series of actions by the bureau against the network, which Patel said investigators believe is responsible for a recent cybersecurity incident on the FBIjobs.gov platform.

In an October 9 statement, Patel noted that the incident occurred on a system managed by a third-party vendor. He stated that agents are currently pursuing additional leads and evidence in the case.

Patel said the FBI is collaborating with partners to dismantle the group and its associates. He described the arrest as evidence of the bureau's capacity to protect Americans from cybercrime, adding that authorities will continue working to disrupt remaining members of ShinyHunters regardless of their location.

ShinyHunters is a criminal hacking and extortion group that previously claimed it obtained sensitive personal information from FBI employees and applicants via the bureau's jobs portal. Reuters previously reported that the group said it stole data belonging to nearly all FBI agents and job applicants. A sample of the data shared with the outlet included agents' names, home addresses, Social Security numbers, assignments, and in some cases, family members' names.

The FBI has stated it is determining whether the security failure stemmed from internal bureau infrastructure or from an external provider handling the jobs website. The scale of the alleged intrusion remains unverified by independent sources.

Jason Pack, a retired FBI supervisory special agent and CEO of Media Rep Global Strategies, told Fox News Digital that distinguishing between stolen personnel data and access to classified investigative systems is critical. Pack explained that obtaining personnel files is not the same as gaining entry to sensitive investigative networks. He noted that based on current knowledge, there is no indication the hackers have access to those deeper systems.

A representative for the Department of Justice did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
