Zion Teasley has agreed to a guilty plea in the 2023 killing of Lauren Heike, a woman discovered with multiple stab wounds on a north Phoenix trail. Maricopa County Superior Court records show Teasley entered the plea last Friday for first-degree premeditated murder. He also accepted a separate charge of sexual exploitation of a minor related to conduct from 2019. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Teasley is expected to receive a sentence of natural life in prison. Prosecutors will withdraw their pursuit of the death penalty as part of the deal. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 4.

Prosecutors voluntarily dismissed other charges against Teasley last week. These included aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary, both stemming from incidents in 2020. The dismissal was part of the broader plea agreement.

Police investigators concluded that Heike's killing was a random attack. They found no evidence of prior communication between Heike and Teasley. A police report indicated that Teasley had been struggling with his sexuality and gender identity. When questioned by police, Teasley stated that Heike appeared to be "what I would want to look like." Investigators also recovered a screenshot they believed shed light on his state of mind, which read, "When I see a beautiful woman and I'm a man." ABC 15 reported that Teasley was fired from one job for being "aggressive toward female employees" and was "suspected of stealing merchandise."

Teasley had served as a Marine recruit. The U.S. Marine Corps confirmed that he entered recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot San Diego on March 25, 2019. He was separated from training on June 17, 2019, before completing boot camp.

Heike was killed in April 2023. A resident discovered her body along a community trail. Police reported she sustained 15 stab wounds and injuries to her hands and forearms. Investigators linked Teasley to the crime through DNA, surveillance video, and cellphone location data. Officials believe Heike was chased over a barbed wire fence during the attack, based on the condition of her clothes and her scattered belongings. Teasley's probable cause statement noted that the suspect ran after Heike, sprinted away, then returned to the location where her body was found and climbed over the barbed wire.

Heike's family said they initially supported prosecutors' decision to seek the death penalty. They ultimately agreed to the plea agreement, which ensures Teasley will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of release.
